BUNIONS
Service Description
Bunion can turn into a debilitating toe deformity which progresses over time. If treated early in the process, can be managed by small conservative interventions. Usually begins with angular changes in the big toe joint where big toe begins to lean towards the second toe. This results in subsequent bony prominence at the joint, causing irritation with the shoe gear and limited range of motion while ambulating. In some cases, the big toe moves toward the second toe and rotates or twists, which is known as Hallus Abducto Valgus. Bunions can also lead to other toe deformities, such as hammertoe. Over time, bursitis or arthritis may set in, the skin on the bottom of the foot may become thicker, and everyday walking becomes difficult—all contributing to chronic pain. Wearing shoes that are inadequate shoe gear with improper fit is the leading cause of bunions. Bunions are not hereditary, but they do tend to run in families, usually because of a faulty foot structure. Foot injuries, neuromuscular problems, flat feet, and pronated feet can contribute to their formation. Treatment for Bunions Because bunion is a progressive deformity, understanding the primary source of deformity is key in managing the deformity. Conservative management using customized taping, padding and proper shoe gear provides adequate relief. If surgical correction is needed, Dr Alamgir will provide a comprehensive designed to achieve best outcome.
